MSI GS65 9SF 2019 Review!

I recently bought the MSI GS65 for school for $1450 on eBay. I bought this laptop with an advertised i7-8750H, 16GB of DDR4 Ram, 512 GB SSD, 240hz Display and a GTX 1660Ti. I was taking the risk of buying this laptop used on eBay but I eventually pulled the trigger. I received the laptop surprisingly 4 days later, came well packaged. When I say well packaged, I mean well packaged, probably about 5lbs of the entire package was bubble wrap and plastic. I began unboxing and soon discovered the MSI Laptop box. I first looked at the specs on the side of the box, and to my surprise it reported an "i7-9750H, 512GB SSD, 32 of DDR4 Ram, 240hz DISPLAY and a RTX 2060". At first, I was real skeptical, could just be a different box I questioned. I began opening the MSI branded box up, and revealed the MSI GS65. I opened the lid and noticed a sticker with the specs, as the box stated, the sticker shows 32GB of Ram, a 240hz display etc. I was super ecstatic and could not wait to start this beast up. Went through the basic Windows setup, when that was over, went right to GPU-Z and "System" to make sure the specs were as stated on the box, and to my behold, it was true. I basically lucked out on this beast.

Onto the System Review

This laptop has exceeded my expectations. The MSI GS65 comes loaded with TONS of I/O, HDMI, Mini DP, Thunderbolt 3, Dedicated Headphone and Mic Jacks, an Ethernet Port, and 3 USB 3.0 ports. a beefy 180w Chicony Power adapter, with an extra long power cord for reaching those far away outlets, huge plus. When I buy a laptop, I look for few things: A good/excellent DAC for music, great display, good to great thermals and a good keyboard. This laptop fulfills all those requirements. Regarding the Audio Quality, it's amazing. I use a program called Boom 3D as my equalizer and it just sounds tremendous. The display is great, I use Adobe Photoshop CC on a daily, and the colors look amazing. The display is running at a 1920x1080 resolution but honestly it's good enough for this 15.6" screen. However, there is no HDR, but doesn't make a difference in my opinion. The thermals out-of-box were horrible, the fans were running TOO loud, HWInfo was reporting 70c at idle which really concerned me, especially because of the 5 fan exhaust and intake areas. I researched online and came across another Blogger "The Everyday Enthusiast" and he had made a custom undervolt, fan curve and GPU overclock. After this, I was even able to increase the Battery life to a whopping 7 and a half hours  *under the circumstance of light browsing and word processing*! After following his guide, the GS65 ran quiet and super-cool, running at a temperature of 32c now! The keyboard in it's regard is good, not great but good. The keyboard is from Steelseries, indicating a full coverage RGB Keyboard which is a nice addition, but the feel of each key could be better. Travel between the keys is alright but has room for improvement, for sure.

Right I/O (1 USB, 1 Thunderbolt 3 Port, Mini DP and HDMI)

Left I/O (Ethernet, 2 USB, Headphone + Mic Ports)

Conclusion

I would really recommend this Laptop to those who require this much power and enjoy gaming on the go. The compactness of the MSI GS65 really assists when travelling, and as a student, I can say that it has been no hassle whatsoever travelling with this laptop.
